Merimbula events

NSW Fisheries runs four hour kids fishing workshops for eight-14 year olds. The kids learn how fish responsibly in a safe and fun environment. NSW DPI fishing workshops include fun lessons on fishing techniques, information on NSW fishing rules, best methods to maximise released fish survival and a practical fishing session in a safe location. Cost per child includes quality rod and reel, shirt, hat, tackle box, show bag. Bookings are essential - please email. Maximum 25 participants. NSW DPI fishing workshops are run with the assistance of the Fishcare Volunteers and are supported by funds from the Recreational Fishing Trusts.

The Sapphire Coast Orchid Club's Winter Show is a most spectacular orchid show and will be held at Twyford Hall in the centre of Merimbula on the NSW far South Coast. This annual event attracts growers from all over the south coast vying for the coveted awards. Cymbidium orchids are at their best at this time of the year, and visitors can see state of the art blooms on show. Along with the rapidly expanding Australian native orchid section there are many other exotic varieties of orchids on show. Potting demonstrations and tips on orchid culture will be given by some of the South Coast's top orchid growers. There is a sales table where members sell excess plants, this provides an opportunity for both the enthusiast as well as the public to purchase quality plants at very reasonable prices. The South Coast Orchid Club presents an orchid show principally for Australian Native Sarcanthinae Orchids - although other orchids in flower at the time will also be on show. Sarcanthinae are principally Australian native orchids from the rainforests and rocky ravines. This show is dedicated to these dainty orchids which are rarely seen at the Club's regular orchid shows. Their flowers may be small but are carried in profusion, and displayed en masse, with their ever increasing colour range, they make quite a show. Complimented by a variety of exotic orchids and other native species the show has a particularly good showing of Masdevallias and some eye catching pendulous Cymbidiums along with Softcane Dendrobiums, all in all the Show is building to a very impressive spectacle.
